In the Wake of Hurricane Sandy

Freeholder and frequent O.C. Mayors attendee Joe Vicari (on the left above) spoke first, describing a troubling situation for the county. Damage from Hurricane Sandy has cost Ocean County as much as $4.5 billion in ratable properties -- "billion with a B," Joe stressed -- and the tax consequences to county residents will be significant. Meanwhile, he explained, there are still thousands of residents who cannot return to their homes, and unemployment is much higher than the national or state average. The freeholder called for urgent action on the part of municipalities to do everything possible to speed repairs and renewal, perhaps by waiving or easing zoning requirements while speeding decisions and application processes. Later, Andrew Raichle (on the right above), an engineer in private practice, presented a  PowerPoint on FEMA maps and discussed what they will mean for the future of the county.
