Assemblyman Ron Dancer briefed the mayors on his work in Trenton. The legislature is hammering out a budget, he said, cautioning that the budget is only numbers and can be superseded by law at any time. Amendments to the state constitution, on the other hand, cannot be superseded. Ron outlined three such amendments that will be on the November ballot — one that requires the state to fully fund pension obligations, one to allow casinos in North Jersey, and yet another to strictly limit Transportation Trust Fund money to transportation projects only.
Ron also discussed Lisa’s Law, a measure he proposed that was passed by the legislature but conditionally vetoed by the governor. Lisa’s Law would require those under restraining orders to wear a GPS device so potential victims will know if they approach. Ron said the law is named for Letiza “Lisa” Zindell of Toms River who was murdered in 2009 by her ex-fiance who was then under a restraining order.
After Ron’s talk, the mayors passed a resolution asking the state to rescind its requirement that local and county governments place public notices in certain newspapers and allow those notices to be posted instead on appropriate web sites.
As you can see to the right, there will be no meetings during July and August. The OCMayors will kick off a new season of great guests in September. We’ll see you then.
Have a great summer!
